Error installing vmware-tools Fedora 17 x64

Okay so Red Hat released Fedora 17 BETA, but like anything else there area some caveats…

installing vmware-tools on FC17 has a couple minor challenges..
#1 Can’t find the GCC binaries…

Searching for GCC…
The path “” is not valid path to the gcc binary.
Would you like to change it? [yes]

What is the location of the gcc program on your machine?

The path “” is not valid path to the gcc binary.
Would you like to change it? [yes]

Pretty obvious.. GCC is not installed by default…

Remedy -as root:
[root@fc17 3.3.2-8.fc17.x86_64]# yum install gcc

#2 can’t find the kernel-header files:

Searching for a valid kernel header path…
The path “” is not a valid path to the 3.3.2-8.fc17.x86_64 kernel headers.
Would you like to change it? [yes]

Remedy -as root:
[root@fc17 3.3.2-8.fc17.x86_64]# yum install kernel-devel

Now if the vmware-tools-distrib.sh script is still running..  kill it with Cntrl-C and restart it and it will find the kernel-header files directory without issue.  If you don’t restart the script it will not find them! <don’t ask how I know this>

The build script should continue on a you are all set.
